Fighting Malaria: Nets for Life

Malaria is one of the deadliest preventable diseases on the planet. Every 30 seconds a child in Africa dies from malaria. NetsforLife wants to change that.

NetsforLife is an Episcopal Relief and Development partnership program that works to mobilize grassroots communities in Africa to prevent, recognize and treat malaria.

Sponsors of the program include Coca-Cola Africa Foundation, ExxonMobil Foundation, Standard Chartered Bank, The Starr Foundation and White Flowers Foundation.

Primal Media is excited to announce that we're working with NetsforLife to redesign their website and get the word out about malaria prevention.

Malaria is deadly

Malaria is a common, yet deadly, mosquito born tropical disease. Globally it's estimated that 300-500 million people contract malaria each year. 1 million people die from malaria each year.

90% of malaria cases are in sub-Saharan Africa, and 3/4 of all malaria victims are children. Every day 3,000 children die in Africa from this preventable disease.

Nets Save Lives

NetsforLife partners with churches and other agencies in sub-Saharan Africa to control and prevent malaria through education, prevention, and the distribution of free life-saving insecticide-treated bed nets.

The nets are hung over beds and sleeping mats, creating a protective barrier against the infection-carrying mosquitos at night when the vast majority of malaria transmissions occur.

Studies show that using insecticide-treated bed nets can reduce the transmission rate of malaria by as much as 90%.

Fighting Malaria

Yesterday, world leaders gathered in New York at the U.N. summit to fight global poverty, pledging $3 billion dollars to fight malaria in an effort to save more than 4.2 million lives between 2008 and 2015.

Launched in 2006, the Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) NetsforLife initiative has already distributed nearly 1 million nets to 15 countries in Africa. Once it reaches this goal, it will set a new one: distribute 5 million nets over 5 years in a total of 18 countries.

The fight against malaria is a big one. We're excited to join in and help NetsforLife as they work in partnership to eradicate this deadly disease.
